As restrictions surrounding COVID-19 start to loosen, we are finally seeing the return of community events happening across Niagara in 2021!
We’ve certainly missed attending the incredible events hosted throughout our beautiful Niagara region. One of the events we’ve missed dearly is the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival. Heralded as Canada’s oldest wine festival, this event showcases Niagara’s thriving wine and grape industry while celebrating community at its core.
Before the pandemic, the festival was held at St Catharines’ Montebello Park located in the heart of the city. People of all ages came for wine tastings, workshops, live music and entertainment. Many of the local wineries offered tours where participants could get a behind-the-scenes look at producing wine during harvest season.
Last year, the event organizers did a wonderful job in pivoting in a pandemic. Rather than cancel the festival, they offered virtual events to keep the spirit of the festival alive.
While the annual Grande Parade was cancelled, a new type of event was created to encourage community spirit during these difficult times: the Porch Parade. Sponsored by Meridian, the parade invited all of Niagara to show their Grape and Wine spirit by decorating their homes and businesses. Winners were rewarded with a mini-parade on their street and received fantastic prizes like tickets for this year’s festival.
Even with COVID restrictions, the festival continued to run its yearly food drive with Community Care to support local food banks. With the increased need for food donations to support families in need, the parade raised over $7,000 in funds for the #StompOutHunger initiative. The Niagara Grape & Wine Festival is all about community - and we couldn’t love that more!
This year’s event will run from Friday, September 17 to Sunday, September 26, 2021. For updates about the event schedule, you can visit Niagara Grape & Wine Festival.
