We already know Niagara is a beautiful place to call home.

We have every shape and size of community from which to choose, including villages, towns and cities. Within our borders, there are all manner of rural abodes – from working farms in quaint settings to historic agricultural properties to newly developed industry revolving around tender fruit and grape production. Which means we make some pretty delicious (Read: award winning) wine as well!

Homes come in all shapes and sizes, and there really is something for every buyer here. Whether it’s a quaint farmhouse you are after, a maintenance –free condo, an efficient bungalow, or a two-storied castle built for entertaining you are seeking, McGarr Realty team members are very good at matching prospective buyers to Niagara homes.

Not only do we want to fit you to your home; we also want to fit you to your community. We’ll discuss your wishlist, and match you to the community that best meets your needs.

While we love all of Niagara, McGarr experts have a special place in our hearts for the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and its surrounding communities. We especially love introducing new people to Old Town, and to areas like Queenston, Virgil and St. Davids. Relating some of the Town’s history to newcomers always gives us a thrill.

Known for its fertile lands, the area’s industry gradually shifted by necessity from lumber production to tender fruit production, by the turn of the century. By the mid-1950s, farmers further diversified, producing not just tender fruit, but grapes to be used to make wine. As the canneries later shut down, fruit production decreased, and is operating today on a smaller scale in the area. Viticulture, the science that studies and produces grapes for wine, took over.

The wine industry has virtually redefined Niagara: It put us on the map as a major producer able to compete on the international level, and together with our history, encourages people to visit from all over the world.

Not only are we leaders in the production of grapes and wine, we are also world-leading, industry-partnered educators. Programs at both Niagara College and Brock University were developed to meet the needs of Niagara’s unique agricultural cool-climate grape and wine production industry.

The St. Davids community is tightly knit and well known in Niagara for its volunteer associations, like the St. Davids and District Lions Club. The club, with more than 100 years of service, promotes Lions and Lioness events throughout the year, raising funds to benefit nations in need and its own community.

Of course, food is important in any community, but in NOTL, it’s celebrated in unique ways. St. Davids features a burgeoning eatery scene, with winery restaurants and unique buildings, like the Old Firehall Restaurant, welcoming visitors from all over the world on a daily basis. Whether you are craving some fine dining or the best burger, you can find it all within minutes of each other, and in the case of Ravine Vineyard, at the same restaurant!

Nature provided St. Davids with an abundance of scenery, too. From rolling hills and gently wooded areas to pretty, unspoiled creeks and rivers, there are wonderful places to enjoy the great outdoors, for awesome family biking, hiking, rolling or walking time.

Plan a visit to NOTL’s Two-Mile Creek Conservation Area, too. Operated by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, the site is a forested floodplain, conserved for its significant ecological features. Trails provide access to the interior of the area and scenery is described as breathtaking, especially in autumn when the colours of the leaves are changing. A wonderful family hike to bring the dogs along on, no doubt.

St. Davids has it all: All the services that benefit the NOTL family of communities; great neighbours; local education; infrastructure; transportation services; access to shopping and other services via Niagara’s other communities; places to enjoy nature; a vibrant restaurant scene; the tender fruit and grape/wine industries … and scenery and history galore.
